Gate Installation in Palo Alto

Need a gate in a fence that already stands?

Send 2–3 photos — the local contractor for Palo Alto will tell you what it likely needs and a ballpark, usually within a few hours, often no visit needed.

Palo Alto is one of the few places where the gate is allowed to be the tall thing. The front strip holds a fence down to a modest height, but an entryway gate and its supporting structure are treated as their own feature with their own allowance. That makes a new front gate a design decision here rather than a hardware purchase — and makes the post under it the thing that decides how long it lasts.

The front gate is not the front fence

The allowance is conditional: it applies to an entry feature, and it comes with limits on how deep and how wide that feature may be before it stops being one. Those figures, with the code sections they come from, are set out on fence rules and permits — worth reading before a gate is ordered rather than after, because the difference between a gate that qualifies and a structure that doesn't is a matter of dimensions, not intent.

Two more Palo Alto conditions that catch front gates specifically: corner lots carry a visibility triangle at the intersection that nothing may stand tall inside, and it is the one rule in the fence chapter with no variance available. And a driveway gate is a sight-line question as well as a fence question. Both belong on the guide page too.

Irrigated lots eat hinge posts

The failure pattern under a Palo Alto gate is dull and consistent, and it is the same one the fence pages here describe: sprinklers run on a schedule against the base of a post that has a gate hanging off it. The wood at grade never gets a long dry spell, and the post is being levered sideways several times a day while it softens.

So on a lot with irrigation near the fence line, the question before hanging a new gate is not whether the post looks straight. It is whether a screwdriver goes into it at ground level. Where it does, the post comes out before anything is hung on it — fence post replacement in Palo Alto is the same job, and there is a worked example of it on that page.

When the gate already there is worth keeping

Not every call that starts as a new gate ends as one, and it is worth settling which before anything is ordered. A leaf that drags, sticks or misses the keeper is usually repairable in place — squared up, re-hung on bigger hinges seated in sound timber, given a latch with adjustment in it. What moves it into the new-gate column is the frame: once its joints have opened, squaring it up only asks the same corners to hold again.

The boundary on the other side is the fence. A gate goes into an opening that exists, or into one cut in a run that already stands — the run itself is not something this business builds.

Eichler gates: the flat top is the point

In Greenmeadow, Green Gables, Fairmeadow and the other Eichler tracts, the fence and the gate are drawn as one horizontal line, flat across the top, with the boards running with the house rather than ticking across it. A stock gate is arched or picketed and stands proud of the run, and dropping one into an Eichler fence line breaks the horizontal in the single most visible place on the elevation.

Matching here is not decoration, it is the cheaper answer: a gate built to the same board direction, the same spacing and the same top line disappears into the run, while a stock leaf commits you to reconciling the rest of the fence to it. The atrium gates on these houses are also narrower and lighter than a general-purpose side gate, which changes the hinge and post sizing in the other direction.

Old Palo Alto and Professorville: matching an original

On the pre-1920s stock the gate is often the only part of the front boundary anyone will look at closely, and the original profiles — turned pickets on the Colonial Revival frontages, square-section on the Craftsman ones — are not stock items. Where the frame has gone but the pickets are sound, the honest job is a new frame carrying the original cladding. In a designated historic district a street-facing change can raise a review question on top of the fence rules, which is a Planning conversation to have first rather than last.

Getting a look at it

Send the opening straight on, both post bases, and the fence run either side. For a front gate, one photo from the sidewalk showing the whole frontage is worth adding — it is the one that shows whether this is an entry feature or a fence with a hole in it. Or call the number at the top of the page.

In Palo Alto a fence across the front setback strip stops at 4 feet — the entry gate through it is allowed 8.§16.24.020(a) That height hangs off one post, so the hinge post is sized for the gate rather than for the fence.
